Seven Days in Deutschland, August 2004

BEGIN. Or else read the following bullshit.

In August 2004, I went to Germany to visit my brother, Mike, who is stationed in Baumholder with the 1st Armored Division. It was my first time back to Europe since I was a wee lad in 1987. In 7 action-packed days, we executed a whirlwind tour of southern Germany, Austria, and Luxembourg. We hit:

...Cochem, on the Mosel River in German wine country.
...Trier
...Concentration Camp KZ-Gedenstätte, aka Dachau
...Munich
...Berchtesgaden
...Some Austria
...Mittenwald
...The Linderhof
...Fussen
...Baumholder
...and WWII's Seigfried Line, along the Sauer River in Luxembourg.

This photo essay covers the trip through to Mittenwald; after that I ran out of digital space and switched to analog. So the rest will come later.

A warning: Having not been there in 17 years, I photographed Germany more as a tourist than as a photographer. If you're accustomed to the usual level of composition and care I hope my pics display on this site, forget about it. These are more snapshots than photographs. Which means this essay veers dangerously close to the neighbors forcing you to sit through a crappy slide show of their trip to Yellowstone. However, (a) I'm a more entertaining narrator, I assure you, (b) I'm probably being too hard on myself, and (c) you are not a captive audience. Go on, go away, if you care to.

Or else begin.

You may, as usual, also navigate the thumbnails at left, although I haven't yet got those location signals to work.
