You just don't see plaques like this every day.
That was my first thought upon seeing this. I know, I know, it's kind of flippant. But
that's the thing about visiting a place like Dachau. You find yourself in a place of such
implacably morbid reality that it staggers your brain. It's so shockingly real that it feels
surreal, and rather than sober reflection your mind responds with giddiness and gallows
humor.
At least, that's how it happened for me. There I stood, looking across ten feet of buried
human ash at a plaque explaining that this was an area dedicated to mass execution, and my brain
could only produce dumb thoughts like the one above. Sorry.
