This is the Dachau moat; accompanied by a ditch, an open patch of grass well-covered by gun towers, and a tall fence, it surrounded the main "housing" portion of the camp. Beyond this stretch of the moat, tucked into dark cedar woods against the outer stone wall of the camp, lay the SS compound, a tidy little campus devoted entirely to mass murder.
